Do you have the vision to drive in New York?
New York City's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices require, like other offices of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, that all drivers take a vision test on the spot or with their doctor to certify that their vision is adequate to drive. Being on the road without meeting proper sight requirements not only endangers you, but it puts everyone else on the road at risk.
Eye Chart Basic Test
When taking a basic vision test at the DMV, you will be asked to read small letters on an eye chart behind the DMV employee. The minimum vision standard is 20/40. If renewing your license, you can also have your doctor fill out form MV-619 to verify that your vision is at least 20/40.
Corrective Lenses
You may not be wearing corrective lenses at the time of the test. But if you are, you will be expected to wear your corrective lenses at all times on the road, too.
Not Quite 20/40
If you fail to prove that your vision is 20/40 but still contend that you are fit to drive, you can have a doctor test your vision and verify that although it's not quite 20/40, it is better than 20/70 with telescopic lenses or corrected visual acuity. Additionally, your horizontal field of vision must be at least 140 degrees. The doctor can fill out DMV form MV-80L to verify this.
Road Test
If you wear telescopic lenses, you will have to pass a road test wearing your telescopic lenses in addition to verifying your sight with an eye exam.
