Osha Training Requirements

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to give training to all employees in the hazards and safety standards specific to their occupations.

Training Sessions

OSHA training can be done in the workplace (required for some occupations), online or by video. However, a live person must be available to answer questions when the training method implemented is online or with the use of videos.

Training Documentation

Documentation of all employee training sessions and refresher sessions should include topics covered and signatures of those in attendance. It is vital for employers to keep accurate records as proof of proper training in the event of an employee accident or work-related illness.

Hazardous substances

A compilation of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) is required for all hazardous chemicals, and information on all workplace contaminents, such as bloodborne pathogens and asbestos, must be documented. This information is included in training sessions and must be kept in an area where it is readily accessible for all employees to review.

Safety Equipment

It is the employer's responsibility to provide thorough training to employees in the necessity and use of any safety equipment, gear, clothing or uniforms required to avoid or prevent personal injury or contamination in the performance of their duties.

Medical Records

Well-documented records must be kept for all occurrences relating to exposure or injury. In addition, employers must keep medical records of all testing, immunization and waivers where required as with health and public safety-related positions.
