Can A Neti Pot Be Overused

Neti Pot Nose

The neti pot is a natural approach to preventing or healing sinus issues. Many have found relief from their sinus problems by incorporating a neti pot into their treatment plan. But some wonder if using a neti pot can be harmful or it if can be overused.

What It Does

Neti pots facilitate nasal irrigation, flushing out the nasal passages with a salt and water solution. This nasal irrigation washes out bacteria, viruses, germs and allergens.

History

Neti pots have been used for centuries in India as one of the disciplines of yoga. As neti cleansing opens the sinus passages, it also facilitates deep breathing. Deep breathing is one of the key aspects of yoga.

Recommended Usage

Neti pots can be used once a week for regular use. Use one twice per day if you are ill.

Side Effects

According to a Nov. 11, 2009 ABC News article, "Neti Pot Once a Day Can Cause Infections," using a Neti Pot on a daily basis modifies the "immunological biochemistry of the nose." This results in a "depletion of immune elements" and can cause sinus infections to reoccur. With regular use, side effects are usually mild and include nasal passage irritation and stinging

Considerations

If you are using a neti pot daily to prevent recurring infections, it's helpful to consult a physician to determine what may be causing the infection.

Warning

Always consult with your physician before starting any new treatment.
