What Are The Differences Between A Chiropractor & A Doctor

Chiropractors are doctors who study the body's function and structure. They are trained in the care of the spine. Medical doctors range from family practice physicians to highly specialized surgeons. They are trained in all aspects of medical care and diagnosis, as well as pharmacology and surgical procedures.

Chirpractic Education

Chiropractors are required to obtain at least a two-year undergraduate education and four years of chiropractic school. They then are required to complete a two-year internship, usually at an outpatient facility.

Medical Doctor Education

Medical doctors are required to complete four years of undergraduate education with a degree, followed by four years of medical school and possibly postdoctoral specialty education. They must complete at least a one-year hospital internship and a two- to three-year residency program in their specialty. (Family practice is considered a specialty).

Chiropractor Licensure

Chiropractors must pass the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners examination.

Medical Doctor Licensure

Medical doctors must pass the United States Medical Licensing examination before they can participate in any U.S. residency program. They also must pass the State Board of Medical Examiners examination. Board-certified specialists must complete educational requirements and pass the American Board of Medical Specialties examination for their particular specialty. (There are ongoing requirements to maintain certification.)

Medications

Medical doctors are allowed to prescribe drugs for patients. Chiropractors can only prescribe vitamin or dietary supplements.

Surgery

Chiropractors are not allowed to perform surgery of any kind. Medical doctors can perform surgery. Most surgeons are board certified, with extra education and residencies in their area of surgical specialty.
