Brush the Teeth of an 11-Month Old Baby
An infant's baby teeth (also known as primary teeth) hold the spaces for his permanent teeth. They also help the baby chew and talk. Even though they will eventually fall out as permanent teeth erupt through the gums, it is important to care for baby teeth as soon as they begin to appear. Most 11-month-olds have several baby teeth. Caregivers must not neglect them.
Instructions
1. Buy a toothbrush made especially for a baby's small mouth. Although gauze is useful before a baby's primary teeth erupt, a brush cleans better once the teeth have poked through the gums. Make sure the bristles are extra-soft. Do not use adult toothbrushes with medium or hard bristles.
2. Sit your baby somewhere comfortable. Make sure you can see her teeth.
3. Use water and the toothbrush to brush your baby's teeth. At this age, toothpaste is not necessary. If the baby is resistant to having his teeth brushed, a smear of flavored children's toothpaste may encourage cooperation. Choose toothpaste that does not contain fluoride. Fluoride toothpaste is not recommended for children younger than age 2.
4. Clean the teeth using a gentle circular motion. Pay attention to the front, back and sides of each tooth. While you are brushing the baby's teeth, clean his tongue and gums, too.
5. Allow your baby to have a drink of water when you have finished brushing.
6. Brush the baby's teeth twice a day: once in the morning and once before bed.
