Recognize When You'Re Dreaming

Learning to recognize when you're dreaming-called lucid dreaming-is one of the most self-empowering things you can do. You can also have a lot of fun in the dream. This helps you to more dramatically see that you are in more control of your life than you think.

Instructions

Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This

1. Keep a dream journal. You could use a tape recorder to put down the key images in your dream as soon as you wake up and transcribe the tape to your dream journal later. If you do not sleep alone, don't use a tape recorder. The other person won't appreciate it.

2. Over time, perhaps as little as a couple of months, you will begin to see the same absurd objects or events pop up your dreams time and time again. For example, celebrities could pop up for no reason at all. Clocks might have completely blank faces. You might try to turn a television off and no matter what you do, it will not turn off. Focus on those absurd events.

3. Get into the habit when you are awake of asking yourself, "am I awake or am I dreaming?" If everything seems normal and the absurd events that often pop up in your dreams do not occur, then it's safe to assume that you are awake.

4. Believe that you are going to recognize when you are dreaming. Tell yourself this before going to sleep. This helps program your subconsciousness for success.

5. Pay attention to what is going on around you whether you are awake or asleep. When you spot an absurd object or event that shouldn't possibly exist, then you know you are dreaming.

6. Say out loud in your dream, "My name is-, and I am lucid dreaming." For some reason, this helps you from waking up from the great dream you have just started to experience.
