Dead Sea Salt Skin Treatments

Located between Israel and Jordan, the Dead Sea yields salt and mud that are used for a variety of skin ailments, such as psoriasis, acne and eczema. With the saltiest water in the world, the sea has shores covered with white salt crystals. However, this isn't regular table salt. The salts of the Dead Sea are mineral salts, just like those found in other oceans, but in higher concentrations.

Dead Sea facts

This body of water is so salty because, although other water sources drain into the sea, none drain out. Therefore, water evaporates, leaving behind salt and minerals. The Dead Sea is the lowest geographic point on the planet and has the highest barometric pressure on Earth. Only about 10 percent of Dead Sea salt is sodium, compared to 90 percent sodium in table salt. The rest of the sea salt is made up of these minerals: boron, calcium, iodine, bromide, potassium, chlorine and bitumen. These minerals are essential to health skin.

Psoriasis and eczema

Roughly 3 to 5 percent of the world's population has psoriasis, a skin condition that gives sufferers dry, red skin. There is no cure. Dermatologists usually recommend steroid creams or other medicines that can have negative side effects. According to Emaxhealth.com, studies have shown that highly concentrated salt from the Dead Sea can be beneficial to skin. Bathing in the sea's waters or using products made from its salt or mud can help relieve psoriasis symptoms after six weeks of routine use. A study done by an Israeli dermatologist showed that of 50 psoriasis sufferers, 47 reported relief after using products made with Dead Sea salt. Patients found the most relief when they used about 2 pounds of salt per bath, three times weekly, over six weeks.

Eczema also causes dry, itchy skin. In severe forms, skin can be broken and bleeding. Dead Sea salts can help soothe skin. Use about 2 cups of the salt in the bath. Sit in the bath for about 20 minutes.

Acne and anti-aging

Dead Sea salt is also used to help control acne. Use 2 to 3 cups dissolved in a bath. Soak for up to 25 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Mineral soap from the sea can also be used to wash the face and body. People also use Dead Sea products such as soaps, creams and mud masks to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and aging. The sodium and potassium found in the sea is good for skin cells.
