Andrographis, also commonly known as False Water Willow and Indian Echinaechia, is an annual flowering herb that many medical authorities consider efficacious in stimulating the immune system and an element in treating influenza, colds, cancer and HIV. Andrographis can most easily be grown from seed, but mature plants can also be planted. Most grow in hot humid climates with good sun exposure, but Andrographis can also be grown shade, though the plant will be less vigorous. It is not finicky about soil conditions and can grow well in both nutrient-poor and nutrient-rich soil.
Instructions
1. Prepare a soil bed or fill a pot with soil to suit Andrographis' sensibilities. Loosen and break up the soil with a shovel. It is not a plant that is finicky to soil conditions, but if potting in a planter or pot, make sure that your soil can hold moisture, particularly in an arid climate.
2. Sow Andrographis seeds in late spring, planting approximately 2 inches deep in the soil. Alternatively, sow seeds in pots indoors in February or March and transplant outdoors into the ground or pots in the spring. Water in well.
3. Transplant seedlings into the soil at intervals of 17 to 24 inches apart, keeping the soil level the same as it had been growing in. Water in well.
4. Transplant mature plants in the soil at intervals of 11 to 16 inches apart, again keeping the soil level consistent. Water in well.
