Extend Battery Life of iPod Classic

There are a variety of things you can do to maximize the battery life of your iPod classic. Keeping these tips in mind when using your iPod classic will prolong the amount of time its battery will last before it needs to be recharged--providing more time to enjoy your favorite music, videos and games. Many of these pointers will also help increase the battery's overall lifespan and delay the need of having to replace it.

Instructions

1. Update your iPod classic to make sure its software is current. Make sure your iTunes software is up-to-date. Connect your iPod classic to your computer using a USB cable. A screen will appear to notify you if there are any available updates for your iPod classic.

2. Avoid leaving your iPod classic turned on when it is not in use. Press the "Play/Pause" button to pause music or video. Slide the "Hold" switch to lock the iPod classic and prevent anything from happening if its controls are touched while not in use. Press and hold the "Play/Pause" button for a few seconds to turn off the iPod classic.

3. Minimize the use of the iPod classic screen back light. Under "Settings," select "Backlight" to shorten the duration of the screen's back light as well as turn it off entirely. Dim the screen's brightness by selecting "Brightness," which is also located under "Settings."

4. Create personalized playlists you will be less likely to fast-forward through. According to Apple, the iPod classic battery uses a substantial amount of power to fast-forward through playlists.

5. Use compressed songs, such as those in AAC or MP3 formats, that are under 9MB in size. This will also prolong the battery life of the iPod classic.

6. Limit the use of third-party applications, such as games that keep the back light on for extended periods of time and, thus, deplete battery life.

7. Use your iPod classic often. According to Apple, the iPod classic's lithium-based battery should undergo a minimum of one charge cycle per month to keep it healthy.

8. Store your iPod classic at the proper temperature. Apple recommends keeping the iPod classic between -4 degrees F to 113 degrees F, and ideally from 32 degrees F to 95 degrees F.
