South Beach Diet Phase One Snack Ideas

Almonds and a tomato

In three phases, the South Beach Diet teaches you create well-rounded meals that leave you satiated. The first phase is a 2-week introduction, and has the strictest requirements. According to Dr. Arthur Agatston, creator of South Beach Diet, phase one eliminates bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, sugar, alcohol and fruit. After the initial phase, you will begin eating these foods again. However, because the first 2 weeks are strict, and because you will eat six times a day, it's important to have variety. The following are suggestions for phase one snacks.

Vegetables and Spread

Stuff celery stalks with one wedge of Laughing Cow cheese, suggests Dr. Agatston. During phase one, many vegetables and salads are unlimited, so you can eat celery until you feel full. Laughing Cow cheese is a creamy alternative for cream cheese, and comes in three distinctive flavors. Dr. Agatston also suggests mixing 1/2 cup of chopped tomatoes and cucumbers with 1/2 cup of low-fat cottage cheese. The protein will make you feel full, and the tomatoes and cucumbers will provide you with a mixture of tastes.

Savory Snacks

Spice up your vegetables, have a handful of nuts, or choose low-fat or non-fat cheese. Kalyn, author of http://kalynskitchen.blogspot.com, suggests sugar snap peas, cut-up tomatoes with rosemary salt sprinkled on top, mini peppers, 1/4 cup of nuts, edamame or a cheese stick. Spices add variety to bland foods and are an often overlooked addition.

Sweet Snacks

Dr. Agatston recommends just 75 calories per day for "sweet treats." However, if you must satisfy a sweet tooth, there are a few options. Sugar-free Jello comes in a variety of flavors and is an excellent choice for calming a raging sweet tooth. No-sugar-added Fudgsicles or sugar-free Popsicles are also good alternatives.
