Home Remedies To Clear Nasal Congestion

According to the Mayo Clinic, nasal congestion is caused when the blood vessels and tissues within the nasal cavity become swollen. It is usually an effect of a cold, allergies, influenza or harsh irritants. Instead of using synthetic nose spray to clear the breathing passage, home remedies can provide near-instant relief without the risk of forming nasal spray dependence.

Warm Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting apples in a vinegar solution. Throughout the fermentation process, probiotics are formed. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that work to fight off various viruses and other germs within the body. The pH level within apple cider vinegar regulates the amount of mucus within your respiratory system. When nasal congestion is caused by an increase of phlegm or mucus, daily intake of apple cider vinegar will help expel these fluids.

To consume this home remedy, warm 6 oz. of water on the stove or in the microwave. After the water has been warmed, mix in 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar. Stir for several seconds and then slowly drink this solution. Since apple cider vinegar has a naturally pungent taste, sweeten by adding 1 tbsp. of pure agave nectar. Repeat two times per day until the congestion has been cleared.

Essential Oils

Peppermint and eucalyptus oils both contain a high level of volatile oil. This specific compound is very similar to menthol, which when inhaled immediately clears phlegm and mucus from the nasal passages. These ingredients can be used as a topical application or combined with steam to form a healing vapor.

To apply these oils topically, mix 1 tsp. of peppermint oil with 1 tsp. of eucalyptus oil in two cups of olive oil. Stir these ingredients to ensure they are properly mixed. Apply directly onto the chest before going to sleep to maintain clear nasal passages throughout the night. To thin the mucus within the nasal passages, bring two cups of water to a rolling boil. After the water has reached its boiling point, add five drops of eucalyptus oil with five drops of peppermint oil. Drape a towel over your head to contain the vapors and lean directly over the steaming water. Breathe normally for 5 to 10 minutes, or until your congestion is relieved. This remedy may cause the mucus or phlegm to be expelled by coughing or sneezing, so have appropriate tissue near.
