Red rice yeast is an herbal supplement used to lower cholesterol. There are some side effects associated with the use of red rice yeast as well as other symptoms of use for some individuals. It's important to understand safely take red rice yeast and what negative side effects to look for before beginning the supplement.


About Red Rice Yeast


The Latin name for red rice yeast is Monascus purpureus. It's also called red rice, red yeast or Hong Qu. It's made by fermenting a type of red yeast called Monascus purpureus over rice. In China, it is used as a preservative, spice and as a food coloring. Red rice yeast gives Peking duck its characteristic red coloring. It's an ingredient often used in fish sauce, fish paste and red wine. It is also used in traditional Chinese medicine and is supposed to help poor circulation, indigestion and diarrhea.


Side Effects


It's not completely understood why some individuals experience the following side effects and why other individuals do not, but here are some of the side effects of taking red rice yeast:


headache


indigestion


bloating and gas


dizziness


heartburn


muscle pain


joint pain


liver inflammation


damage to peripheral nerves


Red rice yeast can also cause myopathy. Signs and symptoms of myopathy include muscle pain, weakness and elevated levels of creatine kinase. Another negative side effect of red rice yeast can be the development of rhabdomyolis, a breakdown of muscle tissues that can lead to kidney failure. This more serious side effect occurs rarely.


Other Safety Information


Red rice yeast products contain citrinin, which is a toxic byproduct of the fermentation process. Women who are pregnant or who are nursing should avoid using red rice yeast. People who have been diagnosed with liver disease or who are at higher risk for liver disease also should avoid using red rice yeast. Also, individuals with acute infections, kidney disease or who have had an organ transplant should not use red rice yeast. If you develop muscle pain or tenderness while taking red rice yeast, discontinue using the product immediately and make a doctor's appointment to discuss the product and its usage.


Always talk to your health-care provider before starting anything new. Discontinue use of this (or any supplement) if you notice a change in the way you feel or feel like you are having an allergic reaction.
