Foods To Avoid With A Yeast Intolerance

Many salad dressings contain yeast.

As a type of fungus, yeast helps regulate the digestive system. However, over-production of yeast in the body caused by certain antibiotics or other food intolerance problems can result in a yeast intolerance. Some symptoms of yeast intolerance include flatulence after eating sugar-based foods, bloating of the stomach, mouth ulcers, heartburn and fatigue after eating. You can manage yeast intolerance by avoiding certain foods.

Breads

Yeast causes dough to rise and is used in most store-bought breads. This means you want to avoid eating sandwich breads, sourdough bread, rolls, bagels, buns, pretzels and pizza crust. While some breads, such as tortillas and specialty breads, do not contain yeast, you want to make sure to read the list of ingredients on the label before consuming any bread product.

Beverages

Alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, cider, malt liquors and sake utilize brewer's yeast during the fermentation, so these products should be avoided if you suffer from a yeast intolerance. You should also avoid drinking grape juice since it also utilizes yeast its production.

Baked Goods

As with bread, bakers use yeast to make dough rise in bake goods. Whether homemade or store-bought, you will need to avoid eating most cookies, cakes and donuts. However, you may be able to bake or buy unleavened cakes that do not use yeast.

Diary Products

You always want to be careful of eating certain diary products. You will find yeast in aged cheeses, yogurt and sour cream.

Condiments

Yeast can also be found in condiments. Some companies manufacture soy sauce with yeast in it and some don't, so be sure to read the ingredients label. You may also find yeast in mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and relish. International sandwich spreads such vegemite, promite and marmite also contain yeast.
