Portabella Mushroom Benefits

Portabella mushrooms are thought to be beneficial in fighting cancer.

Portabella mushrooms are a type of white mushroom classified as a vegetable in food groups but, as a fungus, lack leaves, roots and chlorophyll. The dark, capped portabella mushrooms are a larger form of the small crimini mushroom. In northern Italy, the portabella is known as "cappellone" or "big hat." Traditional Asian medicine promoted mushrooms for their therapeutic value. According to an Iowa State University web article, current research indicates that the portabella has health benefits such as minerals for fighting cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. (Ref 2)

Vitamins

Portabella mushrooms offer the vitamin B-complex needed for energy release. The B vitamins of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid help in the breakdown of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. (Ref 1) Vitamin B2, riboflavin, supports healthy red blood cells, cell reproduction and immune and nervous systems. Vitamin B3, niacin, can improve circulation, maintain healthy skin and maintain digestive and nervous systems.

Portabella mushrooms exposed to UV-B light can contain increased amounts of Vitamin D, which is necessary for maintaining liver and kidney function, immune system, and growth and remodeling of bone.

Minerals

Portabella mushrooms provide the minerals selenium, potassium, copper and zinc. A rich source of selenium, mushrooms boost the immune system and male fertility, according to the Mushroom Information website. (Ref 3) Selenium acts as an antioxidant that can protect body cells from damage. Potassium supports fluid balance, heart rhythm, and muscle and nerve function, as reported by the United States Department of Agriculture. (Ref 4) Two-thirds of a cup of portabella mushrooms offer 422 mg of potassium, equivalent to the amount in a medium banana.

Copper helps produce red bloods cells, transport oxygen and maintain bones and nerves. The mushroom's zinc content impacts the immune system, skin cells, vision, growth and cell division.

Diet

Like vegetables, this mushroom offers a low-calorie, cholesterol-free edible. When grilled or saut ed, portabella can serve as an ingredient, side dish or main dish. In vegetarian meals, the fibrous portabella offers a meaty texture. This mushroom can even act as bread or pizza dough when topped and broiled with cheese, veggies and sauce.

Disease Research

Scientists have studied the portabella mushroom's high selenium level for use in anti-cancer research. The mushroom may prevent breast cancer by preventing the circulation of the hormone estrogen that grows breast cancer cells. Potassium in mushrooms can aid in preventing and controlling high blood pressure. According to the International Copper Association, the mushroom's high copper levels may help osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, colon cancer, cardiovascular disease and bone and connective tissue conditions. (Ref 5) The mushroom's beta-glucans or complex carbohydrates known as polysaccharides aid the immune system.
