Someone who feels tired for weeks, or months on end may be experiencing chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). According to the Centers for Disease Control, anywhere from one to four million Americans suffer from this condition every year. Severe cases of CFS can even affect a person's ability to carry out everyday tasks. Treatment approaches for this CFS include medications, therapy, and routine exercise.


Identification


Feelings of tiredness that persist over long periods of time are typically a symptom of some underlying condition. Psychological disorders, blood sugar disorders, immune system imbalances, and chronic viral infections can all result in symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Some of the symptoms experienced include tiredness, sleep disturbances, muscle and joint pain, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. Medication treatments used for CFS address the underlying physical conditions that may cause feelings of tiredness. Blood disorders like anemia, thyroid disorders and chronic viral infections can all result in CFS. Iron supplements, antibiotics and medications which address thyroid imbalances are some of the treatment types available. Fatigue, muscle/joint pain and problems sleeping are also common symptoms of depression. Antidepressant or anti-anxiety medications may help with relieving the emotional and physical symptoms that accompany depression disorders.


Psychotherapy


Feelings of tiredness caused by stress can also turn into a depression disorder. Under these conditions, individuals may benefit from combining medication and psychotherapy treatments. Cognitive behavior therapy is a method used to address negative thinking patterns associated with the emotional and physical symptoms that accompany depression. By replacing negative thought processes with effective coping strategies, individuals learn better cope with everyday stressors. It's always a good idea to consult with a doctor before starting a supplement regime, especially if a person is taking prescription medications.
