History Of Kundalini Yoga

Meditative chanting plays an important role in Kundalini yoga.

Kundalini yoga is a form of yoga that emphasizes the spiritual awakening of the kundalini, a source of energy at the base of the spine. Postures, or asanas, work alongside chants and meditation to bring increased awareness as a result of awakening the kundalini energy.

History

The practice and theory of Kundalini yoga originated in the Kashmir region of India thousands of years ago, but did not have an official title until 1969 when Yogi Bhajan developed a specific set of practices and guidelines intended to better explain its benefits. Kundalini yoga began as a secret practice passed down only through certain teachers, but it has grown in popularity after Yogi Bhajan's teachings.

Features

Kundalini yoga features chanting, meditation and breathing more prominently than other types of yoga. Kundalini yoga organizes the asanas into specific sequences, called kriyas, designed to accomplish a specific goal such as reducing depression or anxiety.

Benefits

Kundalini yoga benefits the mental status of the practitioner by reducing depression, anger and fear. It also improves the immune and nervous systems by increasing mental clarity and reducing the effects that mental and physical stress have on the body.
