Get Braces Taken Off

Braces are a form of orthodontia using brackets on the teeth and wire to adjust and straighten teeth. The length of treatment will vary depending on the patient, compliance and degree of straightening needed. After the course of treatment, braces are removed during an office visit with an orthodontist. Removal of dental braces is a quick procedure and does not result in pain.

Instructions

Get Braces Taken Off

1. Discuss with your orthodontist the estimated time frame for removing your braces. Braces should not be removed until the treatment is completed and the desired results have been reached.

2. Schedule an appointment with the orthodontist to get your braces off. The office will provide you with any necessary instructions to prepare for the appointment.

3. Allow the orthodontist to remove any elastics, rubber bands, headgear or other accessories that were used in conjunction with the braces.

4. Have the wires removed from the brackets. The orthodontist will use the same techniques that were used during normal orthodontist appointments to tighten and adjust braces.

5. Have the brackets removed. Pliers are used to grip the bracket. Gentle pressure is applied to compress the bracket, breaking the bond from the tooth. All of the brackets are removed.

6. Clean any residue. The leftover glue on the teeth is scraped away and then polished to remove all of the epoxy.

7. Clean teeth thoroughly with a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.

8. Follow the orthodontist's instructions for after care as well as for use of any retainers.
