Chinese Treatment For Shingles

Shingles is also known as herpes zoster; it affects one or more nerves and the skin over them. Usually limited to one side of the body, shingles cause a painful blistering rash. There is a Chinese herbal treatment available for shingles.

Who is Affected?

Shingles usually occurs between the ages of 50 and 70, but can occur at any age. It only affects people who have been previously affected by the virus that causes chicken pox (varicella zoster).

Causes

The virus causing shingles is likely to be reactivated when the immune system is weakened. A weak immune system may be due to age, the use of immunosuppressants, certain disorders and inadequate nutrition.

Symptoms

Shingles usually causes abnormal sensations in affected parts of the body a few days before the rash appears. The abnormal sensations may be itching, numbness, deep pain, extreme sensitivity to touch and a "pins and needles" feeling.

Chinese Formula for Shingles

The herbal formula, Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang (cimicifuga and kudzu decoction), is used to treat shingles. The formula effectively reduces rashes and fever, clears the stomach, opens pores to expel heat and cool the blood, clears infection and relieves toxicity.

Nutrition as Treatment

Chinese physicians ascribe shingles to damp heat or chronic infection of the gall bladder duct. The doctors treat shingles by recommending a diet free of gluten and red meat, and the inclusion of fish, chicken and fresh vegetables.

Further Treatment

To provide relief from blisters caused by shingles, Chinese physicians recommend saline baths.
