What Are The Health Risks Of Nutrisystem

What Are the Health Risks of Nutrisystem?

The NutriSystem plan has celebrity spokespersons and subscribers throughout the United States. However, the diet plan may not be all that it is advertised to be, and in some cases may cause more health and diet issues than it solves. It is important to weight all of the benefits and drawbacks of any diet plan; this is especially true for NutriSystem.

What Is NutriSystem?

NutriSystem is a prepackaged diet plan in which meals are delivered each week to your home. The meals are specially calculated to control calorie intake while still providing the essential vitamins and minerals needed for the body to be healthy. As of 2009, the meals cost around $300 per month for one person.

Education

The first health risk to NutriSystem users is a lack of nutritional education. Having your foods delivered to you is good if you can afford to do it the rest of your life. However, it does not teach its users shop and prepare their own food once they exit the program.

Complex Carbohydrates

Many NutriSystem users complain of added tiredness or weakness while on the NutriSystem program. This is largely because most of the meals in the program do not provide enough complex carbohydrates to sustain users who wish to both diet and exercise more.

Rebound Weight

One of the largest dangers of the NutriSystem plan is rebound weight. The NutriSystem diet does not provide a good transition from eating the prepackaged meals to preparing meals on your own. This leads many people to gain back much of the weight that they lost during the program, due to the drastic change in eating habits.

Diet Changes

Another health risk of of the NutriSystem plan is that it does not offer a way for you to gradually move from a high-calorie diet to a strict low-calorie diet. This forces your body to live off a larger calorie deficit than it is used to, and if combined with exercise could result in lightheadedness or even fainting. The hunger pains associated with the change also lower the person's ability to remain on the diet plan.
