Use Bergamot

Bergamot is a flowering plant that is part of the mint family. It has a citrusy scent and a flavor that is savory as well as fruity, Both the leaves and flowers are used for therapeutic purposes. Bergamot can be taken as a tea or used as an essential oil in skin care products, massage oil, perfume or aromatherapy. The scent is believed to bring joy and energy and is considered to be an aphrodisiac.

1. Drink bergamot tea to heal chest and throat problems as well as general cold symptoms, and to assist with digestion. The flowers can be purchased from herbal stores. Soak 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried bergamot for approximately three minutes in a cup of boiled water.


2. To help treat eczema, acne and psoriasis, blend six drops of bergamot in 2 tbsp. of a carrier oil such as olive, almond, jojoba or grapeseed. Rub into the affected areas.


3. To alleviate depression, stress and anger, put a few drops of bergamot in water on an oil burner.


4. Massage a combination of the bergamot essential oil and the carrier oil onto the skin. This will assist with respiratory problems and headaches, as well as anxiety and depression. It is believed in Chinese medicine that bergamot supports the liver.


5. For a bergamot-scented perfume, add 10 to 12 drops of bergamot oil to a small, dark bottle that contains 80-proof brandy or vodka and leave it to sit for 7 to 10 days. You will then have a bergamot scented perfume. To add dimension to the perfume, add six drops of a wood or resin scent such as sandalwood or vanilla and leave it to sit for 24 hours in the alcohol. Then add six drops of a floral scent such as jasmine or geranium and leave that to sit for 24 hours. Add six drops of the bergamot and leave the mixture to sit for seven to 10 days.
