Cope With Hypertension

Hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) is a serious medical condition that affects many people today. Hypertension is when the blood pressure is constantly elevated at or above 140/90 mmHg. If left untreated, this condition can lead to a stroke, heart attack or heart failure. If you are suffering from hypertension, it is so important to learn effectively cope with this illness. There are several ways in which a person can cope with hypertension each day. Read on to learn cope with hypertension.

1. Monitor your blood pressure often. The first step in coping with hypertension is keeping track of your blood pressure. You should constantly check your blood pressure and make sure that you record the information in a book or on a notepad. Many people check their blood pressure everyday (once in the morning and once before going to bed). Your doctor can let you know when and how often you should check your blood pressure at home.


2. Eat healthy and follow a well-balanced diet. It is important to eat healthy foods (especially when you are suffering from an illness). Eating healthy can make you feel good and give you the energy that you need to better cope with hypertension. Try eating foods that are high in protein and fiber, along with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Also, be sure to limit your sodium (salt), sugar and carbohydrate intake.


3. Follow a regular exercise schedule. Try exercising at least four times a week, for 35 to 40 minutes each session. You can always increase your workout schedule, but it is best to start slowly and gradually add to your schedule over time. You may choose to participate in physical activities such as walking, jogging, swimming, biking, aerobics, tennis or kickboxing. Be sure to check with your doctor before beginning any type of exercising program.








4. Take all of the medication as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor gives you the appropriate medication to take in order to help treat your hypertension. By properly treating your illness, you can better deal with the side effects and symptoms of hypertension. And as a result, this can help you to better cope with hypertension on a daily basis.


5. Find a local support system to help you cope with your illness. There are a variety of support groups available that can help you deal with and manage your hypertension. Check with local churches, social groups, community centers or family members and friends, to locate a support group.


6. Keep your blood pressure under control. The best way to cope with hypertension is to control your blood pressure. You can control your blood pressure by taking good care of yourself, going to the doctor for regular office visits, avoiding things that can harm your body (such as alcohol and tobacco) and living a stress-free lifestyle.
