Properties Of Bergamot Oil

Bergamot is an essential oil that has many beneficial properties including antiseptic, antibacterial and antidepressant properties. Bergamot oil is usually available at natural food stores and online.

History

Bergamot oil comes from the bergamot tree in tropical Asia. The bergamot tree is also grown in Italy. The smell of bergamot oil most closely resembles citrus.

Improve Your Mood

Bergamot oil can be used to elevate mood. Try aromatherapy using bergamot essential oil to help fight depression. Consume a few cups of Earl Grey tea a day; it contains bergamot.

Skin

Add several drops of bergamot oil to your bath to help with skin problems including eczema, psoriasis and acne. Also try blending bergamot oil into an unscented lotion or cream and apply to your skin.

Caution

Consult your doctor before using pure bergamot oil if you're taking antidepressants already. Don't stop taking or reduce your medication without talking to your doctor first.

Health Conditions

Check with your doctor before using bergamot oil or consuming large amounts of Earl Grey tea on a regular basis if you have diabetes, kidney or circulatory problems, or a heart condition. Bergamot oil contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that can cause eye problems.
