Use Flaxseed Oil to Treat PMS


Flaxseed products--oil pressed from the seed and the seed itself--contain a compound called phytoestrogen. This is a plant-based estrogen that is a weaker form of the hormone our bodies produce. Some women have found that taking flaxseed oil can help treat symptoms of PMS, including mood swings and breast pain. Flax may also be an effective, natural way to treat uncomfortable hot flashes that occur in menopausal women.


Instructions


1. Use flaxseed oil on a short-term basis when you feel PMS symptoms beginning. Be aware that you may feel some minor side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea and fatigue if you are not used to taking flaxseed oil. If the side effects become uncomfortable, contact your doctor.


2. Slice some kiwi fruit into a bowl of lowfat yogurt. Mix in 1 tbsp. of flaxseed oil. Kiwi is a good source of vitamin E, which can help relieve PMS symptoms in addition to the phytoestrogens found in flaxseed oil.


3. Toss your salad with a flaxseed oil and lemon vinaigrette. Use fresh spinach and top with raw almonds, foods that are rich in vitamin E. In addition to easing PMS symptoms, this type of healthy meal can help lower your cholesterol and decrease your risk of heart attack.








4. Avoid using flaxseed oil in cooking or baking, as it cannot withstand heat. You can use ground flaxseed in multigrain bread recipes if you prefer that method to using the oil. Flaxseed is lower in fat than the oil and may be better for those who are watching their caloric intake.


5. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet by adding ground flaxseed to your foods. The additional fiber will keep your digestive system running smoothly and may help alleviate premenstrual bloating.


6. Exercise 2 to 3 times a week for 30 minutes each time. Women who exercise regularly tend to have fewer health complaints throughout the month.
