Why Would One Apply Acupressure To The Temple Area

Acupressure is the combination of the principle of acupuncture and pressure. It is a form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used to balance the body's yin, yang and chi by stimulating the meridian system (channels or lines of energy that flow through the body).

Function

Acupressure applied to the temple area stimulates the point called, Taiyang. When this area is rubbed gently it calms and relaxes the mind while also relieving headache that originates in the temple area.

Do it yourself

Rub hands together to warm them, then use the tips of your index and middle finger to gently rub your temples in a circular motion. Keep eyes closed and use gentle pressure to stimulate this acupressure point.

Tips

Liniment or a massage oil can enhance the use of acupressure on the temple area when trying to relieve a headache. Be careful not to get any oils into the eyes as burning and irritation could occur.

More uses

Acupressure applied to the temples is mostly used to relieve tension caused by headache but it can also be used to relieve anxiety, aid in sleep and may help reduce wrinkles near the eyes.

Warnings for pregnant women

Acupressure should be used with caution if you are pregnant as certain acupressure points can induce labor or start contractions. Acupressure applied to the temple area is safe for pregnant women to use.
