Principles of Magnetic Therapy








Magnetic therapy is an alternative treatment approach that use magnets as a source of directed energy. It is based on the physics of electromagentism, and applies these principles to the magnetic fields present in the human body. This form of treatment, though practiced in many fields, is not considered a standardized medical treatment.


Identification


The principles of magnetic therapy are rooted in biomagnetics. Biomagnetics is a branch of bioscience that specializes in the study of the magnetic fields contained inside the human body. This field examines how the body's magnetic fields interact with the biological systems that make up the body. The laws of physics as they pertain to magnetism are incorporated as a way to understand the fields contained inside the body. Magnetic fields have been found to have an effect on biological processes like ion movement, electrical signaling, lipid metabolism and hormonal activity.


Physical Characteristics


Magnetic fields have certain physical characteristics that determine how energy is directed. The strength of magnetic fields is determined by their intensity, or how their wavelengths are structured. Magnetic fields form into a space configuration that works to surround the source of the field, be it a magnet, or a conducting wire. The wavelength inside a field can travel at a static, or fixed rate as is the case with a permanent magnet; or it can travel at a varied rate as is the case with A/C, or alternating currents. The electrical currents used in magnetic therapy make use of variable wavelengths in order to accommodate the changing magnetic fields within the body.


Electromagnetic Interactions


The principles behind magnetic therapy utilize electromagnetic interactions to affect the magnetic fields within certain areas of the body. The chemical makeup of cellular processes rely on a certain electrolyte balance to properly function. The body uses electrolytes to assist with the electrical signaling mechanisms that take place between cells. Electromagnetic stimulation is used to stimulate ion activity inside living tissue. Free radical materials present in cellular tissue may also be altered by a change in the magnetic field, causing chemical processes to impair the effects of these materials.


Effects


The effects of magnetic therapy treatments are believed to correct malfunctions within the chemical and physiological processes in the body. By balancing magnetic fields within bodily systems, processes realign to their natural, normal functions. The effects include improved blood circulation which works to provide needed oxygen and nutrient materials throughout the body. Electromagnetic effects can increase cellular processes that stimulate the production of ATP, or cellular energy. This in turn fuels the entire system with added energy. Hormone production processes may also undergo a balancing effect as electromagnetic energy works to alter electrical signaling processes within the brain.


Treatment Uses


Magnetic therapy has found a number of uses in the treatment of bodily ailments. Pain management treatments make use of magnetic fields as a way to redirect the electrical signals that reach sensory nerve endings. Conditions in which the immune system is compromised are also influenced by the effects electromagnetic energies have on cellular defense systems, and the chemical reactions that take enhance these processes. As magnetic fields can have a direct influence on electrical signaling pathways, therapy techniques can improve electrical processes within the brain. Improved brain function can work to restore sleep patterns, regulate stress response and improve conditions involving central nervous system disorders.
