Making Massage Oil

Massage is an ancient remedy to cure stress and other ailments. It is the oldest form of mental and physical healing. Massage relaxes the body and helps to remove toxins. Making your own massage oil is an easy task. The intended purpose of the massage can help to determine the type of ingredients you may want to add into your oil.

Base Oils

Making your own massage oil costs less than purchasing one from a store or boutique. It also ensures the freshest ingredients are used. The base oil is the majority of your massage oil solution. Several types of oil such as safflower, grapeseed, baby or sweet almond oil will work as base oils. If you have skin problems like acne or oiliness, you may use apricot kernel, evening primrose, sunflower or wheat germ oils as a base oil.

Aromatherapy Essential Oils

Aromatherapy essential oils are added to the base oil for fragrance. It is believed that certain combinations of essential oils benefit the body and can have an effect on mood. Massage oils that promote energy usually contain essential oils scented with balsa fir, pine needles, wintergreen, peppermint and lemon. Scents that promote relaxation are sandalwood, rosewood, lavender and jasmine. Massage oil for couples can also be made by using the following scents to promote sensuality: jasmine, rose, geranium, patchouli and ylang ylang.

Basic Recipe

The basic recipe for massage oil is simple to remember. First, choose your base oil. You need to add 6 tsp. of the base oil to a bottle with a tight lid. Next, choose the essential oil(s) you would like to add to your base oil. Add eight to ten drops of essential oil into the base and mix.
