Water In The Ear Treatment

When water becomes trapped in the ear canal, it can cause otitis externa, better known as swimmer's ear. The water irritates the skin of the ear canal and allows bacteria to flourish, causing an infection.

Warning

If water in the ear progresses to swimmer's ear, you will need to see a doctor for antibiotic drops to kill the bacteria.

Expert Insight

Over-the-counter remedies for swimmer's ear are effective for drying out water in the ears. Dr. Dan Drew, a family physician in Indiana, advises using the OTC treatment whenever you get water in your ear. But he cautions that, despite manufacturers' claims, OTC medicines won't treat the problem if it progresses to swimmer's ear.

Effects

Sometimes you can use a blow dryer on cool or warm setting to get rid of the moisture. Don't use the dryer too close to your ear.

Considerations

Gravity can drain the water. Tip your head so that the painful ear is pointed downward. Use a towel to collect any moisture or pus. Always dry your ears after exposure to water, including bathing.

Prevention and Other Solutions

Prevention is the best "treatment" for swimmer's ear. According to Dr. John House, associate professor of clinical otolaryngology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, you can apply a few drops of mineral oil, lanolin, rubbing alcohol or white vinegar before a swim to keep the ear canal drier. Covering your ears is also helps prevent water in the ears. Use a swim cap or ear plugs.
