Types Of Pills That Should Not Be Crushed

Pills can be dangerous if crushed

As a general rule, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist before crushing any pills, since some medications are coated with slow release agents or coating to protect the stomach lining.

Breast Cancer Medication

The breast cancer pill Tamoxifen is dangerous if inhaled by the person breaking up the medication, particularly if they are pregnant. Other cancer chemotherapy agents cannot be crushed and could be fatal.

Pain Killers

Crushing morphine could lead to a faster release that is potentially fatal.

Blood Pressure Medications

Nifedipine, a blood pressure medication, increases the risk of stroke if crushed.

Extended Release Tablets

Many extended release pills can be dangerous if crushed. Even allergy medications such as fexofenadine or pseudoephedrine are on the Pharmacist's "Medications Which Should Not Be Crushed List."

Stomach Irritants

Any medications with enteric-coating will irritate the stomach or mouth if crushed. A couple examples are atomoxetine and alendronate.
