Give An Infant Cpr

Give an Infant CPR

When giving an infant CPR, first determine that the scene is safe and then do a preliminary check of the patient. In this scenario, emergency crews have been called, but the victim requires additional care.

Instructions

Rescue Breathing (pulse, but no breathing)

1. Gently place one hand on the forehead and two fingers under the chin.

2. Tilt the infant's head back slightly to open the airway. You do not need to tilt too far, as young children's airways are smaller.

3. Place your mouth over the infant's nose and mouth, covering the entire area.

4. Give one breath every three seconds, blowing gentle puffs of air until the chest clearly rises.

5. Continue breathing for the infant until she becomes conscious, further help arrives, or you become too tired to continue.

CPR (no pulse, no breathing)

6. After you have looked, listened and felt for breathing, check for a pulse on the infant's brachial artery (upper arm). If there is no pulse, begin CPR.

7. Place one hand gently on the infant's forehead to tilt back the head.

8. Place two fingers on the center of the chest across the nipple line.

9. Compress down at a depth of 1/2 to 1 inch, using only your two fingers, 30 times.

10. Give the infant two breaths between compressions. The rate is 30 compressions to two breaths.

11. Continue giving CPR.
