Cure A Bad Thumb Drive

Thumb drives are convenient for backing up your files.

Thumb drives, also known as flash drives, are portable devices that store data. In a thumb drive you can carry files or programs and transfer them to other computers, or you can backup and store important documents. Unfortunately, these portable devices can be susceptible to physical damage or data corruption due to their small size. There are two ways to cure a bad thumb drive: formatting the drive or running the Windows Checkdisk utility.

Instructions

Formatting Thumb Drive

1. Connect your thumb drive to the computer. Go to the "Start" menu on your task bar and click on "Computer" or "My Computer."

2. Look under the list that says "Devices with Removable Storage." Right-click on the "USB DISK (G:)". Select the "Format" option on the drop-down list, to open the formatting menu.

3. Click on the "File System" tab and choose the FAT or FAT32 options from the drop-down menu.

4. Click on "Start" once you select the FAT or FAT32 options to start the full formatting process. This will format your thumb drive. You can check on the format of your thumb drive by right-clicking on the "USB DISK (G:)" and clicking on "Properties." The format will be listed under the "General" tab next to where it says "File system."
