What Is Myoplex

Myoplex is a nutritional supplement designed and sold by Energy Athletics Strength (EAS) Corporation. Myoplex variations are commonly sold in health clubs and nutrition stores, and can even be found in many retail grocery chains. The products are also seen on television commercials with star athletes, such as Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, endorsing the product.

History

Abbott Nutrition owns the Myoplex brand. Abbott was founded in 1903. They specialized in milk products and pediatric nutrition in the early years of the company. Bill Phillips, best-selling author of "Body For Life," founded EAS and Myoplex in 1980. He sold the company to Abbott in 2005.

Types

Myoplex was originally designed as a protein shake and has been expanded to incorporate many different products. Myoplex products now include Myoplex Deluxe Powder, Deluxe Bar, Ready-to-Drink, Original Powder, Lite Powder, Lite Bar, Lite Ready-to-Drink, Carb-Control Bar, Carb-Control Ready-to-Drink and Mass Bar. The Lite products contain less calories than the original formula. The Carb-Control products contain less calories per serving than the original formula. The Ready-to-Drink products are the most popular sellers.

Features

The Myoplex brand is designed and advertised as daily nutrition for hard-training fitness enthusiasts and athletes. The shakes can be purchased in up to six different flavors. The Original Ready-to-Drink is available in Chocolate Fudge, French Vanilla, Strawberry Cream, Rich Dark Chocolate, Cookies and Cream and Mocha Latte. The bars can also be found in a variety of flavors. As far as supplements go, Myoplex products do not taste bad.

Function

The Myoplex products are designed to assist post-workout muscle recovery and growth. The patented MyoPro Protein Blend is a combination of milk proteins and whey protein with calcium. While whey and casein are both derived from dairy products, the two have different effects on the body. Whey protein, derived from cheese, is quickly digestible and assists muscle recovery. In Myoplex blends, the whey protein is brought to the muscles to jump-start protein synthesis while carbohydrates replenish energy reserves. The fats help joint recovery. Micellar casein protein, derived from raw milk, digests more slowly than whey and assists long-term muscle growth. The milk proteins release amino acids into the system for seven to eight straight hours. Casein protein can also lead to increased nutrient absorption and improved nitrogen retention.

Considerations

Whey and casein products work best when they are unprocessed and unaltered. It is not clear if the proteins found in Myoplex are processed and to what extent. The exact amounts of whey and casein in the protein blend is also unclear.

Warning

Do not consume Myoplex products if you are lactose intolerant.
