Epimedium Varieties

Plants like epimediums can drive away deer.

Epimediums feature prominently herbal remedy history. Chinese herbalists used the epimedium as an aphrodisiac and as a remedy for osteoporosis. These epimediums grow well in very dry regions and thrive with very little water. While they are durable, plant epimediums as soon as possible. Early planting gives the epimediums time to acclimate to the climate. Incorporating a slow-release fertilizer while planting the epimedium can help the plant thrive.

Cantabrigiense

The Epimedium cantabrigiense is an evergreen epimedium that grows 10 to 18 inches tall and grows 36 to 40 inches wide. The epimedium cantabrigiense produces small, white flowers featuring a slight pink hue. These plants deter deer feeding. Deer feed on a variety of plants and placing some varieties of epimedium among other plants reduces the likelihood deer will come by.

Lilafee

E. grandiflorum, commonly called the lilafee is a deciduous epimedium producing large and dark lilac flowers of lavender and violet. The leaves develop a slight copper tint in the spring that later turn light green. The plant bears foliage between 8 and 12 inches tall and wide. Like the cantabrigiense, the lilafee resists deer. This lilafee survives in colder temperatures than the other epimediums.

Sulphureum

The sulphureum epimedium spreads very quickly, providing very good ground cover. The sulphureum has small, yellow flowers that look like the racemes of daffodils. The leaves have a reddish color. The sulphureum can eventually reach 12 inches tall.

Frohneiten

The frohnleiten is one of the most sturdy epimediums. This plant produces yellow flowers like many of the other epimediums, though the yellow is unusually vibrant. When the leaves first emerge from this epimedium, the leaves are bronze, but the bronze slowly disappears to the edges of the leaves before vanishing completely, leaving green leaves behind. If this plant gets full sun and if the gardener waters it enough, the plant will bloom in February. This variety spreads very quickly throughout the garden.

E. Rubrum

E. rubrum is an epimedium that grows vigorously, forming a clump. Unlike the other epimediums, this variety features vibrant reddish leaves and only loses some of the red hue while maturing. This is another deer resistant epimedium.

Warleyense

The warleyense has evergreen leaves. On top of the evergreen leaves are stalks with flowers that are red and yellow. This plant does not spread as quickly as many of the other epimediums.
