What Is Methylin

Methylin is a medication prescribed for children, and some adults, suffering from ADD, ADHD and other impulse control disorders. While it has proven effective, there is a large list of cautions, side effects and restrictions that come with the use of this medication. Both the Mayo Clinic and the Food and Drug Administration recommend that a doctor be consulted and all possible treatments for impulse control be considered before using this medication.


Identification


Methylin is a prescribed medication that comes in a chewable tablet. This medication is listed as a controlled substance because of its addictive possibilities. Because of the ability of this medication to be abused, only authorized prescriptions can be legally obtained. There are many brand names for methylin such as Concerta, Metadate CD, Methylin and the most well known brand Ritalin. The generic name is methylphenidate.


Uses








Methylin is used as a stimulant of the central nervous system. It is used to control chemicals in the brain and nervous system that contribute to impulse control and hyperactivity. It is also used to treat ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and Narcolepsy.


Cautions


When discussing the use of Methylin with a doctor, you should know about possible problems that may arise with its use. Problems such as heart conditions, increased heart rates and blood pressure have been reported. People who have a history of previous heart conditions or defects are at risk of heart attacks or stroke that can result in death. A family history of heart problems must also be considered. A regular check of blood pressure is recommended by the FDA. Another issue to consider is the potential for addiction or abuse of this medication. If your child or family members have had dependence upon alcohol or prescribed medication or other drugs you should inform the doctor. Long-term use of Methylin has been shown to have the possibilities of slowing a child's growth.


Side Effects


There are a range of potential side effects with this medication. The most common side effects to Methylin are nervousness, headaches, nausea, dizziness, weight loss, problems sleeping, increased heart rate, loss of appetite and stomach aches. Blurred vision or changes in eyesight have also been reported. Patients with a history of seizures may notice increased frequency in the number of seizures.


Restrictions








If either you or your child have a tendency to be anxious, tense or over agitated, this medication is not recommended. Patients who have taken antidepressants categorized as MAOI (monosamine oxidase inhibitor) within the prior two weeks of seeing their doctor are also restricted from taking this medication due to potential serious side effects and reactions. Patients under 6 years old are also restricted from this medication.
