How Does An Antiscald Faucet Work

Pressure Control


Anti-scald faucets and related control valves protect you from being burned by maintaining an adequate balance of the water pressure in hot and cold water inputs. Changes in water pressure result from the use of shared water by other faucets or devices, such as flushing toilets or running washing machines. These devices reduce water pressure in the water sources they use, be it hot or cold. Anti-scald faucets feature either a diaphragm or piston that will move in response to water pressure changes. This response immediately maintains the balance between the cold and hot water coming through your faucet or shower.


Anti-scald faucets that work through pressure control keep water temperatures constant. This is an added benefit in scald prevention because you will not have to adjust the hot or cold water valves to find the right temperature, reducing your risk of scalding during temperature adjustment.


Thermostatic Control


Thermostatic control anti-scald faucets and valves are more expensive than pressure control devices. This is because of their more elaborate function. Instead of relying on pressure changes to determine when to balance cold and hot water in your faucet, thermostatic control anti-scald faucets respond to the actual temperature. These anti-scald faucets and valves have built-in thermostats. The faucet will take in more cold water if the water gets too hot. This effect depends on the temperature at which you set the anti-scald faucet's internal thermostat to react.


Much like pressure control anti-scald faucets, thermostatic control faucets and valves eliminate the need to adjust your hot and cold water valves, eliminating the risk of scalding while attempting temperature adjustments.


Combination Control


Combination-control anti-scald faucets and valves are also expensive and respond to changes in both pressure and temperature. The combination-control anti-scald faucet balances pressure whenever there are changes due to the use of shared water. They also adjust water input accordingly, based on the temperature of the water flowing into the faucet. These anti-scald faucets and valves provide the ultimate protection against scalding by maintaining this dual effect.
