Repair An Eljer Kitchen Faucet

Broken stem

With the dismal economy and the high-hourly rate of calling a plumber, very few have or want to spend the money hiring someone else to repair simple jobs around the house. Repairing an Eljer kitchen faucet is a simple do-it-yourself job that doesn't call for a professional. The most common problem with an Eljer faucet is when the stem within the body of the faucet breaks and needs replacing. You'll know this is the problem if you are experiencing irregular water temperature and pressure.

Instructions

1. Close both the hot and cold shut-off valves beneath your sink.

2. Remove the Allen nut on the front of your Eljer single handle faucet; doing this should allow the handle to be removed. If you have a double handle faucet, then remove the decorative cap on top of the handle, and remove the Phillips screw beneath this that is holding the handle in place.

3. Remove the stem by pulling it towards yourself with a pair of pliers. If you are having trouble removing the stem, then try turning it counterclockwise and pulling towards yourself.

4. Insert the new replacement Eljer stem into the opening that you removed the defective stem from.

5. Place the handle back onto the stem.

6. Tighten either the screw or Allen nut that holds your handle onto the new Eljer stem.

Tips Warnings

Any local hardware or plumbing supply store will carry replacement Eljer stems.
