Clean A Chain With Rust

Chains exposed to the elements or those that are old will likely need to have rust buildup removed. Refurbish your chains with a simple and environmentally safe method. This process works for bicycle chains or chains used for swing sets or pet leashes.

Instructions

1. Remove the chain from its location.

2. Drop the chain into the coffee can and cover with vinegar. The vinegar will remove the rust but it will need to sit for 12 hours.

3. Remove the chain from the can and scrub with the wire brush. Rinse the chain. If it is not completely clean or clean enough, place it back into the can and replace the vinegar and allow it to sit for another 12 hours. Check after 12 hours and repeat the cleaning process.

Tips Warnings

If it is a bicycle chain you can drop the chain into a coffee can and pour oil over it to loosen up the joints.
