Lexington, Kentucky is the perfect place for an old-fashioned, Southern wedding.
Lexington, Kentucky has long been known for horses, horse racing and bourbon whiskey. However, the second largest city in the Bluegrass State also boasts a number of key locations for weddings. Whether it is a southern belle wedding at the John Bell House or a small wedding at the Church at Athens, Lexington has much to offer. An old-fashioned trolley car provides public transportation in the downtown area. Couples may also enjoy touring the city in a romantic horse-drawn carriage.
Pastoral Weddings
Beautiful pastoral settings surround Lexington. Couples planning an outdoor wedding should consider The Arboretum. This 100-acre facility is designated State Botanical Gardens of Kentucky and is a well-known location for outdoor weddings, with several landscaped gardens, manicured trees, topiary sculptures, elegant fountains, a two-mile walking path, trellis, gazebo and a fish pond. Another popular site for an outdoor wedding is the Headley-Whitney Museum with its 13 scenic acres. A less well-known but no less lovely location is the Amazing Grace Wedding Chapel. This small garden spot along the Midland Trail comes complete with trees, gardens, a lake, turtle doves and a wedding trellis.
Southern Belle Weddings
Couples looking for a wedding with a touch of Lexington's antebellum charm should look no further than the old manor houses. The John Bell House is a stately southern mansion designed with a unique combination of Greek Revival, Romanesque and Queen Anne architecture; it's noted for its sweeping grand staircase, columns and beveled and stained glass windows. Built in 1831, the Carrick House offers couples full-service wedding amenities and a picturesque view of Lexington's skyline. The historic Bodley-Bullock House, built after the Revolutionary War, is now a key attraction during wedding season. VisitSouth.com recently ranked this house number 17 on the site's 150 Places to Get Married in the South.
Country Church Weddings
For those who simply want a small wedding in a country church, there are a number of notable churches in Lexington. Known locally as the wedding church, the Church at Athens is a non-denominational church overlooking a sprawling horse farm. This church offers couples a full kitchen, sound equipment including a CD player and wireless lapel microphones, space for private dressing areas and a basement reception room with plenty of extra chairs and tables. The Macedonia Christian Church is, according to Lexington videographer Kevin Moreland, a very cool church for a small wedding. This church has an indoor waterfall, large pipe organ and a piano that sounds lovely, especially at Christmas time. The Woodland Christian Church is located in the green woods adjacent to Woodland Park. Spires of sunlight peeking through its ornate stained glass windows create a romantic setting.
Hotel Weddings
Hotels are a good choice for large weddings and for accommodating out-of-town guests. For guests looking for a large metropolitan wedding, two of the nicest hotels in Lexington are the Hyatt Regency-Lexington and Hilton Lexington/Downtown comprising more than 700 guest rooms, banquet halls and ballrooms. These hotels are connected to the Lexington Convention Center, which also has a number of large banquet halls as well as the Bluegrass Ballroom. The Convention Center is near the Rapp Sports Arena and the Lexington Opera House. Another elegant hotel for weddings is the Embassy Suites Hotel, located near the University of Kentucky's Cold Stream Research Campus. Embassy Suites in Lexington boasts 12,000 square feet of banquet space, including five ballrooms, for rehearsal dinners, weddings and wedding receptions.
