Pull Out A Cartridge From A Shower Faucet

Removing an old cartridge is necessary for many shower repairs.

Behind the wall of your shower is a shower body. Hot and cold water come up separate pipes in the body to meet in the middle. The middle portion of the body leads up to the showerhead. To control the temperature of water coming up the shower body, a single- or double-hand faucet is attached to the body. Attached to the handle of the faucet is a cartridge that moves in and out of the body as the handle is turned, controlling the flow of water.

Instructions

1. Turn off the water supply at the water supply valve for the house. Turn the handles of the shower to remove any water from the pipes.

2. Pull off the cover of the faucet handle, using the tip of a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the screw underneath with a Phillips screwdriver and pull off the handle. If there is no cover to the handle, look underneath the handle and remove the Allen screw with an Allen key.

3. Remove the washer from the end of the exposed cartridge.

4. Locate the retaining clip on the top of the cartridge and lift it up, using the tip of your flat-head screwdriver.

5. Grab the cartridge with a wrench and wiggle it back and forth to loosen it from the shower body. Place a cartridge removal tool over the cartridge if it will not pull out with the wrench. Tighten the bolt on the end of the cartridge removal tool until the cartridge comes out.

6. Pull out the cartridge and replace with a similar model.
