Install An Anti Scald Device

Scald protection devices are musts for any home with a physically challenged member, elderly adult or young child. Most cities require installation of anti-scald devices, especially in new construction. In addition to protecting your family from burns, an anti-scald device saves money on your energy bill. You can find anti-scald devices at a plumbing supply store or a hardware store.

Instructions

1. Decide which type of anti-scald device you want. The most expensive is the thermostatically-controlled valve. The least expensive is the pressure-sensitive valve. A third type is the pressure-balanced valve.

2. Choose a faucet with the appropriate anti-scald device. Pick one with a durable finish that has a good warranty.

3. Read the installation directions carefully. Failure to do so can be a costly mistake. Manufacturers don't always clearly mark the parts, so it becomes even more important to read the directions. Simply connecting the hot water to the cold line by mistake can ruin a faucet in seconds.

4. Solder a stub of pipe into the adapter. Do this away from the faucet. Let stub cool. Apply pipe dope or plumber's tape to the threads. Drape a wet rag over the connection to absorb heat before soldering the next fitting.

5. Flush the water supply lines before reattaching the faucet with the assistance of a pipe wrench. Bits of junk can clog up an anti-scald device.

6. Attach the faucet. Slowly turn on the water supply valves. Turn on the hot- and cold-water valves of the faucet simultaneously. Too much pressure can jam the anti-scald device. To reduce pressure the first time, turn on the other faucets at the same time as well.
