Build A Wood Fort

Build a Wood Fort

It is every kid's dreams to have a wood fort in their backyard to hide, play, or even sleep in. A basic wood fort structure can be built in a matter of hours. Over the years, additions such as paint, windows, and even carpet can be added to the fort. A simple yet sturdy wood fort can provide years of imagination and enjoyment for both children and parents.

Instructions

1. Select the wood fort location. Dig up sod and grass from the area and level the ground, leaving a layer of dirt as the base. (see ref.1)

2. Place corner posts into the ground. Use two 2-by-4 pieces of wood to form a corner. Sink the two posts into the ground, leaving 8 inches sticking up. Repeat this process to form four corners.

3. Lay the bottom beam supports. Lay 2-by-6 pieces of lumber between each corner to form the supports.

4. Lay the floor using sheets of plywood. Attach the plywood to the 2-by-6 joists using wood screws. Repeat every 12 inches.

5. Construct the walls of the fort. Lay 2-by-4 pieces of lumber side-by-side on the floor of the fort. Attach a 2-by-4 piece of lumber lengthwise to the top and bottom of the side-by-side pieces. Add an additional 2-by-4 piece of lumber 4-inches from the bottom and secure to the floor with screws. Repeat until all four walls are constructed.

6. Lift the wall into place. Set the wall on the bottom of the attached 2-by-4 (4 inches from the bottom) and secure with additional screws. Repeat until all four walls are complete.

7. Add windows and a door. If desired, use an electric-powered saw to cut out a window and a door. Use hinges and door hardware to finish the door.

Tips Warnings

If the floor of the wood fort is more than 4 feet-by-4 feet, use an additional floor joist in the center of the floor for additional support.

Add screws into the floor from the top of the 2-by-4 lumber and from the outside walls of the fort for added strength.
