Powerlifting Scholarships

Powerlifting is not an NCAA-sanctioned sport.

Powerlifting is a form of competitive weightlifting that involves a lifter's attempting three separate types of lifting in a sequence. The sport is not sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), meaning that all universities and colleges in the United States do not offer powerlifting scholarships. Some educational institutions, however, may offer other forms of scholarships, such as academic grants, to offset tuition costs for a potential powerlifting team recruit.

The American Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation Scholarship

The American Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation offers scholarships totaling $500 to federation members who are either currently pursuing or planning to pursue higher education. Eligible higher education institutions include four-year universities, two-year universities and technical training programs. Awards will be given directly to the winners' schools. According to the federation's website, the scholarships are meant to reward members who demonstrate the federation's values. Applicants must be drug-free lifters who do not already possess four-year degrees.

U.S.A. Powerlifting Collegiate Committee Scholarship

The U.S.A. Powerlifting Collegiate Committee offers scholarships to high school seniors who are members of the organization and plan to compete at the high school powerlifting nationals. Generally, two scholarships are awarded, one to a female and one to a male. Eligible applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA and submit transcripts, a short essay and two letters of recommendation. Scholarship money is to be used at the two- or four-year college or technical program the winner decides to attend following high school.

Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association Scholarship

The Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Scholarship offers 12 $500 scholarships to twelfth-grade women powerlifters who may need financial assistance in college. Eligible applicants must demonstrate financial need, be residents of Texas and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Transcripts are requested as part of the application, which also calls for three letters of recommendation. Applicants must also be attending high schools that are active members of the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association.

Louisiana High School Powerlifting Association Scholarship

The Louisiana High School Powerlifting Association rewards twelfth-grade high school seniors in Louisiana with $250 scholarships. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA. The scholarship is meant to be used at a higher-education institution of the winner's choosing. Scholarships are sent directly to the colleges or universities where the winners have been accepted.
