Gambrel Roof Measurements
Are there any standards or guidelines for Gambrel roof measurements? I want to make one for a 12' x 16' shed. Should the two sections be equal in height? Should they meet a certain proportion of the way across the width? Just wondered, if not I can make my own plans up. Chris. Gambrel barn roofs are usually set with the upper section at 30 degrees and the lower section a 60 degrees. Get out the pencil and graph paper and do the math. Hi, I am a very amateur builder. I would like to build a storage shed with a gambrel roof similar in shape to my home. The second floor of my home is, with exception of the gable end walls, constructed using trusses under the floor, above the ceiling and on the roof walls. I would like to make storage available above the ceiling in the shed, but do not quite under stand build a storage truss on such a small scale for a 12' x 16' building. A contractor-friend suggested building it with rafters, but I don't know fit in storage using it. Does anyone out there know where I could look at pictures or renderings of gambrel storage shaped trusses or rafter designs? I would like to build them with 2 x 4s and either set them atop the wall plate or block in between them. I nned help! parkpointer, You MAY be able to 'site-build' a joist and rafter system for this shed where you are -- but check with your local bldg. dept. BEFORE you start. (I couldn't do it in CA!!) Several issues here. First, you shed is 12' X 16' -- in CA, that would require a bldg. permit. (Scale it back to under 120 sq. ft., and no permit is required.) Next, ANY building in CA that requires a permit HAS to have engineered trusses -- site built joists and rafters won't be passed by the inspector. Finally, your statement that you are a very amateur builder scares me. Do you know anything about snow loads, wind loads, what siesmic zone you are in, etc.?? Hi, Thanks! I checked and 120sf is max (boxed in - 4 walls) without a permit; however, I can build the roof larger as long as the space below is not completely closed in. I have re-drawn the 12' x16' plan with part of the shed fully enclosed 10' x 12' and the remaining 6' x 12' with the side and back walls up and the front and end walls omitted. It will give the shed a porch of sorts, basically an area protected from rain/snow but with a solid floor. The building inspector said that I could put up a soft-barrier draped across either opening for protection purposes, but nothing permanent/solid beyond the 120sf limits. Snow loading is definitely a concern. In talking with the building inspector, I changed my plan from 24 OC to 16 OC starting with the floor joists on up to the roof rafters. Thanks for your concern. I have a 10' x 12' shed and want to build a gambrel roof. I have 2 x 6 ceiling joists running the 10' span. I would like to have 6' 6 height in the middle underneath the roof. I want to use 2 x 6 rafters for the gambrel roof. Is there someone here that can help me to figure out the design? Thank you. lasernat, Welcome to the forums. I mentioned earlier that the slopes on a gabrel are usually 30 and 60 degrees, but they don't have to be exactly that. Best thing is to do a scaled drawing of the end view of the shed and determine the overall height that you want to end with. Gambrels usually don't have ceiling joists either, but they certainly can. It's all in how you design the truss for them. Without ceiling joists, it falls on the gussets at each joint in the truss to prevent roof movement. Hi Lefty, thank you for the reply. Sorry for the confusion on those ceiling joists, they are actually the ceiling joists for the 1st level and floor for the 2nd. Guess you can tell I am a real amatuer at this. I was doing more reading and from what I read it says that the 3 peaks would touch on a radius that is equal to half the span of your building. So according to that my height would be 5' , now is that something that is written in stone? Or could I deviate from that in order to get my 6.5' feet height in the center? Is there a reason why I can not extend the first slope from my walls up higher? I drew out a 24/12 pitch for those and a 4/12 for the 2nd slope but staying within those parameters I can only get around 5'3 height. This is all greek to me but I will try my best to learn it. I also read about purlins but they did not mention whether it is better with or without them, do you have an opinion about them? Thank you. It's wood framed construction, and it's a shed. There's NOTHING cast in stone! You can make the walls higher if you choose to. You can change the pitch of either or both roof faces. What about ridge boards? Pro's, con's? Or just use the four boards tied with plates = good enough. Thanks. For me it is much easier to build one of these without a ridge board. I build the floor, lay a jig out on that to fabricate the trusses with, (plywood gussets at each of the joints of the boards), set them aside and build and stand up the walls, then install the trusses, ...
