looking-for-the-best-exterior-caulk-and-filler

Looking for the best exterior caulk and filler

Doing a remodel in the Pacific Northwest. Lots of rain in our area. I'm installing new painted wood windows and exterior trim. Looking for specific brand and product recommendations for: 1. caulking the exterior trim and windows seams 2. nail hole filler products, especially those products with minimal shrinkage. Typically I use Vulkem polyurethane caulk for my seams and recently have used MH Ready Patch for filling nail holes. Suggestions? Does anyone have any experience with the paintable silicon in lieu of Vulkem? Just thought I'd see if there were other good alternatives. Thanks I use caulking made by OSI called Quad. It extrudes easily even in cold weather and it comes in lots of siding colors. It sticks tenaciously to about everything. It also does not attract dirt, and is paintable once it cures. I've only filled nail holes with it a couple times (16d casing nails in brickmould) and I was able to smooth the caulking with a rag and some paint thinner, but when I went back a couple months later, I noticed that it shrinks back a little bit as it cures, because the holes were slightly concave. XSleeper, Does the OSI caulk extrude smooth like silicon or grainy like Vulkem? To get Vulkem to appear smooth requires going over with tool or rag and paint thinner... Thanks It's smooth and creamy, especially when you set it in the sun. The bronze color reminds me of hot fudge. mmmm! I know what you mean about some #'s of vulkum being grainy- its not like that at all. If you keep the nozzle of the tube clean, you can get a really nice bead with it, and it's slightly self-smoothing. But as far as filling nail holes, you can't really wipe it with your finger like silicone, because it won't wipe clean- it'll leave a smeary mess unless you use thinner and a rag. novice question here, but why not use 100% silicone to caulk siding, windows, etc.? but why not use 100% silicone to caulk siding, windows, etc.? 100% silicone won't take paint and is nearly impossible to remove and replace if it is damaged. Thanks for your reply... where can I get polyurethane caulk? Local home stores (Lowes, Menards) does not seem to carry it. I did see a URETHANIZED caulk at Menards, is that similar? I gave this Dap product a try the other day... DAP® SIDE WINDER® Adv. Polymer Siding Window Sealant Advanced polymer formula siding sealants deliver excellent performance on vinyl, fiber cement, aluminum and wood siding. Permanently flexible. Wet weather and low temperature application. No shrink and virtually no VOC's (less than 1 percent). Interior/exterior use. Paintable. Meets ASTM Specification C 920. It's quite tenacious stuff. But try as I might, I couldn't get the dang stuff to quit oozing after running a bead and then backing off my caulk gun. Picture of the mess after setting down the gun for 30 secs (plunger was backed off right after running the bead)... Caulk I tried all sorts of techniques. It was 65 degrees that day, so it wasn't too warm or cold. It seemed to get a little better towards the last bit in the tube, but you've got to be laying the stuff without pausing... Anyone have any comments? Suggestions? Xsleeper, haven't got my hands on the OSI by Quad. I believe it's a polymer blend also like the Dap product.
