install HardiPlank siding?
What type of air gun should I use to install HardiPlank? What type and length of nails should I use? How far apart should I have the nails? Thank you. Siding nailer with adjustable depth of drive setting. 2 3/8 Hardi nails, ring shanked galvanized The siding must be nailed into the studs (every 16) Roofing nails work awesome. Just make sure to pre-drill a pilot holes at the end corners, esp if sharing a stud. Many home improvement stores such as Lowes has instructions for installing it and their website does too. Don't forget moisture barriers too, good ole roofing felt works real good and not too $ to use. Does Hardiplank smooth siding come primed or do you have to prime it? If you use a good quality latex paint, how many years can you go between painting? I live in Richmond, VA. Thanks for any information you can give me. hi my 2 cents worth if i had the option to used Hardiplank or vinyl i would chose vinyl 1. no painting 2. maintenance free hose down for cleanning 3. cheapper 4. better resale value my opinion Me I would go with Hardi Plank, yes cost more but well worth it. Unless you plan to sale soon down the road. 50 yr warranty, very durable and strong and even adds to the strength of the house its self etc. etc. With Vinyl you get what you pay for. ALot of Vinly is real thin and looks bad when viewed from the side, alot of the cheaper cost vinyl does fade and even cracks and just like anyother siding has mildew and mold growth issues. Vinyl is cheaper if you go the cheap route for the cheap stuff but if you go with the better and thicker Vinyl siding its not cheap at all. The way I view Vinyl siding is that you are basically gift wrapping your house! On a windy day the stuff is even loud sometimes as it moves and flexes with the wind blowing against your house and soffits. Had a friend that yes he was stupid but was grilling a good 3 feet away from the back of his house and his vinyl siding started to buckle and even melt! Hardi is fire retardant. Resale value just depends on the buyer, many people view vinyl sided houses as cheaper spec homes, or if it is an older house that the siding is hiding something underneath and those that have owned a vinyl sided house tend not to buy another one next go around. Hot dipped galvanized nails. If you countersink a nail, caulk and then renail and make sure it is snug. Make sure the nails are 3/8 away from the edge. I am assuming that you will be face nailing since most people do 6d common (2 length) No pre drilling is required. Oh I forgot, all HardiPlank is primed except for Heritage shingleside. If you want a nice look blind nail don't face nail. Face nailing looks bad plus Hardi recommends 12 OC if you face nail. If you are in a humid climate or near the ocean Hardi recommends stainless nails such as roofing nails or siding nails. If you don't pre-drill the corners that you nail you run the risk and more than likely will crush the corners somewhat if nailing by hand.
