What Is A Transom Window

What Is a Transom Window?

Whether it is a new home under construction or a remodeling project of an older home, the types of windows installed not only add visual appeal to the home but are also helpful in controlling temperatures within. Transom windows are ideal for adding both a decorative touch and providing extra light and circulation.

Types

Transoms are fixed or operable allowing the window to open and close. The windows are pre-hung and ready to install or can be custom ordered to fit particular sizes.

Effects

The transoms are separate additions placed above a traditional window unit or door adding a decorative touch, allowing extra light and more viewing area into a room and providing circulation when using the operable style window.

Features

Windows are primarily rectangular but available in round or square designs and equipped with or without a hinge. A single pane is clear glass, leaded, etched or stained or divided into sections using wood trim.

Considerations

Transom windows are used alone in areas where additional light is needed while maintaining security, such as an attic, garage or an area below street level like a basement.

Benefits

Transoms are cost effective in colder areas due to the extra sunlight coming in affecting a room's temperature.
