Use Of Romex Wire For Underground Use

Always check local codes when installing outdoor wiring.

The Southwire Cable company purchased the Romex name in 2001. Romex is a nonmetallic, sheathed cable with two to three cables insie it. Southwire calls the underground version UF. Romex underground feeder cable deploys quickly like the nonmetallic cable for indoor use but has protective elements for direct burial in the ground.

Code

Check your local building codes for any deviations from the National Electric Code, NEC. NEC calls for waterproof UF cable for direct burial underground cable. Some instances require conduit if the wire is exposed or is in shallow trenches. NEC Section 300.5 states UF cable needs to be 24 inches deep. NEC 340.10 deals with permitted uses of UF cable.

UF Cable

Contractors use the Romex UF cable for feeder and branch cable for commercial and residential electrical use. . The Romex UF cable comes highly resistant to acids, alkalis, corrosive fumes, chemicals, lubricants and ground water. It is non-corroding, sunlight-resistant and will not support combustion. It is UL listed and shrink-wrapped.

Applications

Applications of UF cable include air conditioning, lighting or outdoor fountains and ponds. Electricians bury the Romex UF cable without conduit in deep trenches. The Romex UF cable is waterproof and also has an indoor use in unexposed damp areas of houses.
